The National Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Ikenna Enekweizu, has reaffirmed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will be on the ballot for the 2027 general elections despite the legal challenges currently facing the party.

Enekweizu dismissed concerns that the ongoing court disputes surrounding the NDC‘s registration status could prevent the party from participating in the next election cycle. He expressed confidence that the party would successfully overcome its legal hurdles and remain a strong contender in the race for Nigeria’s highest office.

According to Enekweizu, the NDC leadership remains united and committed to its mission of providing Nigerians with a credible alternative to the current political establishment. He emphasized that Peter Obi continues to enjoy the full support of the party and remains its officially recognized presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 polls.

The NDC secretary said recent speculation suggesting that Obi could abandon the party due to its legal troubles is unfounded. He insisted that the former Anambra State governor remains committed to the NDC and will lead the party’s campaign when preparations for the election gather momentum.

“Our candidates will be on the ballot in 2027, and we will win the elections,” Enekweizu stated confidently, adding that the party would not allow legal challenges to derail its political ambitions.

He further alleged that some political actors are attempting to use legal processes to prevent Obi from contesting the election because they view him as a major threat. According to Enekweizu, such efforts are driven by fears that Obi could perform strongly at the polls if given a fair opportunity to compete.

“Peter Gregory Obi is our presidential candidate, and some people who know they cannot defeat him in an election do not want him on the ballot,” he said.

The NDC has recently been at the center of controversy following a court ruling that raised questions about the party’s registration status. While the judgment has generated debate among legal experts and political observers, the party has vowed to challenge the decision through all available legal channels.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the case, Enekweizu maintained that the NDC is continuing its political activities and grassroots mobilization efforts across the country. He noted that the party is simultaneously pursuing legal remedies while preparing for the 2027 elections.

The NDC leadership believes that growing public dissatisfaction with the country’s political leadership presents an opportunity for the party to expand its support base. Enekweizu argued that many Nigerians are seeking change and are increasingly attracted to Peter Obi’s message of accountability, economic reform, and good governance.

He stressed that the party remains focused on its long-term objectives and will not be distracted by ongoing legal battles. According to him, the NDC is determined to remain a relevant force in Nigeria’s political landscape and is confident that it will emerge stronger from the current challenges.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gradually intensify, the outcome of the legal dispute over the NDC’s registration is expected to play a significant role in shaping the party’s future. Nevertheless, Enekweizu’s message was clear: Peter Obi remains the party’s presidential candidate, the NDC intends to participate fully in the election, and its leadership remains optimistic about securing victory at the polls.

For now, the party continues to project confidence that both the courts and the electoral process will ultimately allow Nigerians to decide their next leader at the ballot box.
